Farm Diversification: New incomes for educating the public

Are we as farmers trying hard enough?

This is where we need to ensure the next generation understands you! How can we do this as a sector though? The gap needs to be closed between farming and the general public. There are a few figure heads starting to do this; Abbie Reader (Dairy), Gareth wyn Jones (Sheep) and of course Adam Henson, the countries face to farming. This is all well and good, but realistically this is only a handful of names and there are 138,000 farmers in the UK. Couldn’t we all be doing our part as farmers, telling our stories, trying to educate those that are none the wiser that wouldn’t know the difference between a cow and a sheep. Yes, yes we can, even if it’s the smallest of things.

Stabilizing your farm business

The big discussion of today, farm diversification, it’s in conversation everywhere and this could be key in narrowing the gap and educating the next generation. There are so many different ideas out there that could bring people onto farm and educate them. There are even diversifications that can be done for those people that don’t want to bring people onto farms. Diversifications also allows to create a “buffer”, where a lot of farms rely on seasonal incomes and at times of the year have very little income. The diversification allows for constant cashflow, creating a more stable business, not reliant on one form of income.

Five educational farm diversification options

So that is the business bit out of the way, back educating the next generation. There are so many different farm diversification options out there that could be implemented very easily.

1. Farm Schools

2. Education Centres

3. Farm Experiences

4. Meet the farmer on Zoom

5. Farm Resilience Programmes

We can do this

So yes, we can help educate the general public about farming. You can do as much or as little as you want, but every little bit counts. Even if it’s talking about what you do on the farm to none farmers in the pub. Our industry just needs to pull together. we can do this and bring farming back to the forefront of the nation.
