Chicken or Egg - Working with retail to drive a successful diversification opportunity.
About John Kirkpatrick
John Kirkpatrick joined TESCO in 2015 as agricultural manager for poultry and eggs (Europe, including the U.K., and South America and Asia) and is responsible for agricultural supply across feed mills, breeders, hatcheries, grow out, catching/transport and slaughter across the following species: chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese and eggs. In addition, Kirkpatrick is responsible for feed sustainability and security across all monogastric and ruminant species at TESCO.
Kirkpatrick describes himself as “a farmer in TESCO,” bringing a very practical and straight-talking approach to grocery retail. He is passionate about great agricultural production across the global supply chains and regularly challenging farmers and suppliers to maintain, and indeed enhance, the high standards expected by customers.
Educated initially in agriculture at the College of Agriculture, Food & Rural Enterprise, Greenmount Campus in Northern Ireland, he then studied poultry production and science at Harper Adams University in Shropshire, England.
Kirkpatrick describes his experience to date as “a very great privilege” to have been involved with passionate and professional producers who are driving the U.K. poultry and egg industries forward in a profitable and sustainable manner.
John Kirkpatrick will be discussing a significant change program across the TESCO poultry and egg division which he has led, focused on improvement based on science, evidence and factual information. One specific area that he has developed in order to deliver to customer expectations is welfare outcome measure reporting, providing benchmarking tools to benchmark not only within the country, but globally.
He currently manages in partnership with suppliers and third party audit provider Integra, a diverse and challenging global portfolio; however, it is one that presents significant opportunities for the future of U.K. agriculture.
